Am 28. März 2011 teilte die Betreiberfirma Tepco des havarierten Kraftwerkes Fukushima 1 mit, dass Spuren von hochgiftigem Plutonium im Boden insgesamt an fünf Stellen um das Kraftwerk nachgewiesen wurden. Die Bodenproben sind am 21. und 22. März genommen worden.

Plutonium has been detected in soil samples taken from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. On 28 March 2011 the plant operators Tepco say the samples, taken at the plant on 21 and 22 March, could have been discharged from nuclear fuel at the plant hit by the March earthquake and tsunami.
