Potsdamer Instituts für Klimawandel, Erdsystem und Nachhaltigkeit Ereignis

Die Bundesregierung hat zusammen mit dem Land Brandenburg das Potsdamer Institut für Klimawandel, Erdsystem und Nachhaltigkeit (Institute for Advanced Climate, Earth System and Sustainability Studies, IASS) gegründet. Es wird zunächst sieben Jahre lang mit neun Millionen Euro jährlich gefördert, überwiegend aus Mitteln des Bundesforschungsministeriums. Bis zu 50 Gastwissenschaftlerinnen und Gastwissenschaftler werden von wenigen Wochen bis zu zwei Jahren hier arbeiten. Als Gründungsdirektor steht Klaus Töpfer dem neuen Institut vor. Konkrete Forschungsfragen sind Auswirkungen des Klimawandels, Emissionsminderung und Anpassung an die Folgen der Klimaveränderungen. Es wird um die Zukunft der Energiegewinnung gehen und darum, wie die nachhaltige Entwicklung auf globaler Ebene vorangebracht werden kann.

Elite scientists from all over the world will conduct research at the newly-founded Institute for Advanced Climate, Earth System and sustainability Studies (IASS) in Potsdam. Their aim will be to find solutions for the most pressing challenges of our time: climate change and the preservation of our environment. As the home of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Studies and the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences, Potsdam is already a center of earth and climate research. The German Federal Government and the State of Brandenburg will support the IASS with 9 million euros annually for the next seven years, most of which will come from the budget of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Klaus Töpfer, who has served as Germany’s Environment Minister and the General Director of the UN Environment Program has been tapped to lead the Institute.
