Wissenschaftler entdecken riesige Flächen von Plastikmüll im Atlantik Ereignis

US-Wissenschaftler haben auch im Nordatlantik Bereich entdeckt, wo sich Plastikmüll ansammelt. Der schwimmende Müll im Atlantik ist mit dem Great Pacific Garbage Patch vergleichbar. Die Ergebnisse einer umfangreichen Langzeitstudie wurde am 24. Februar 2010 von Kara Lavender Law von der Organisation Sea Education Association (SEA) bei einem Treffen von Meeresforschern in Portland (US-Bundesstaat Oregon) vorgestellt. Für die Studien stachen Wissenschaftler und Studenten mit einem Forschungsschiff mit großen feinmaschigen Netzen im Schlepptau in See und entnahmen an 6100 Stellen in der Karibik und im Atlantik vor der Ostküste der USA Proben von den schwimmenden Plastikteilchen. Wie im Pazifik gibt es auch im Atlantik eine Region, in der sich dieser Müll aufgrund der Oberflächenströmungen vermehrt ansammelt. Mehr als 80 % der Plastikteilchen fand sich in dem Gebiet zwischen dem 22 und 38 Grad nördlicher Breite. Die größte Müll-Dichte lag bei bis zu 200.000 Plastikstücke je Quadratkilometer auf der Meeresoberfläche.

Scientists have discovered an area of the North Atlantic Ocean where plastic debris accumulates. The region is said to compare with the well-documented "great Pacific garbage patch". Kara Lavender Law of the Sea Education Association announced the findings of a two-decade-long study at the Ocean Sciences Meeting in Portland, US on 24 February 2010. The work is the conclusion of the longest and most extensive record of plastic marine debris in any ocean basin. Scientists and students from the SEA collected plastic and marine debris in fine mesh nets that were towed behind a research vessel. The researchers carried out 6,100 tows in areas of the Caribbean and the North Atlantic - off the coast of the US. They found a region fairly far north in the Atlantic Ocean where this debris appears to be concentrated and remains over long periods of time. More than 80% of the plastic pieces were found between 22 and 38 degrees north. The maximum "plastic density" was 200,000 pieces of debris per square kilometre.
