Convention on Migratory Species declares 2009 Year of the Gorilla Event

Die Bonner Konvention hat das Jahr 2009 zum Jahr des Gorillas erklärt. Partner dieser Kampagne sind das Great Apes Survival Partnership (GRASP) in Verbindung mit UNEP und UNESCO sowie der Weltverband für Zoologische Gärten und Aquarien (WAZA). Mit dieser Aktion sollen die in Afrika akut vom Aussterben bedrohten Menschenaffen besser geschützt werden. Drei der vier Gorilla- Arten sind auf der Roten Liste der Weltnaturschutzunion IUCN als «vom Aussterben bedroht» klassifiziert. Zu den Bedrohungen gehören die Jagd zum Verzehr und für die traditionelle Medizin, die Zerstörung der Lebensräume durch Abholzung und Bergbau, bewaffnete Konflikte und Erkrankungen wie Ebola.

The UNEP Convention on Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), the UNEP/UNESCO Great Ape Survival Partnership (GRASP) and the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) have joined hands to declare 2009 the Year of the Gorilla (YoG). Three of the four gorilla species are listed as ‘Critically Endangered’ in the International Union
for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. The main threats to gorillas are hunting for food and traditional medicine, destruction of habitat
through logging, mining and production of charcoal, the effects of armed conflicts and diseases like Ebola.
