The National Park Service turns 100 Event

Schon 1872 wurde in den USA der erste geschützte Nationalpark eröffnet. Doch erst am 25. August 1916 unterzeichnete der damalige Präsident Woodrow Wilson das Gesetz zur Schaffung des National Park Service. Ihr obliegt die Verantwortung für über 380 Gebiete im Bundesbesitz mit kultureller, historischer oder landschaftlich herausragender Bedeutung. Die Aufgaben des National Park Service bestehen darin, die verwalteten Orte der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich zu machen und die natürliche Landschaft und Tierwelt und historische Denkmäler für künftige Generationen zu erhalten. Zum 100. Geburtstag des National Park Service heißt es immer wieder, die Nationalparks seien eine der besten Ideen Amerikas.

The National Park Service is an agency of the United States federal government that manages all U.S. national parks, many American national monuments, and other conservation and historical properties with various title designations. The NPS is charged with a dual role of preserving the ecological and historical integrity of the places entrusted to its management while also making them available and accessible for public use and enjoyment. It was created on 25 August 1916 by Congress through the National Park Service Organic Act. The National Park Service is celebrating its centennial in 2016.
