Climate protection through conservation of mangroves in the South Pacific Event

Mit Mitteln der Internationalen Klimaschutzinitiative des Bundesumweltministeriums in Höhe von 2,3 Millionen Euro wird die Weltnaturschutzunion (IUCN) in den kommenden fünf Jahren in Fiji, Vanuatu, den Salomonen, Samoa und Tonga den Mangrovenschutz vorantreiben. Das Projekt setzt erste Empfehlungen der vom Bundesumweltministerium und der Europäischen Kommission initiierten internationalen Studie "The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity" (TEEB) um, die nicht nur die ökologische, sondern auch die wirtschaftliche Bedeutung intakter natürlicher Lebensräume klar herausstellt. So kosteten beispielsweise das Anpflanzen und der Schutz von fast 12.000 ha Mangroven in Vietnam 1,1 Milo. US Dollar, gleichzeitig wurden damit aber Kosten in Höhe von 7,3 Milo. US Dollar an Instandhaltungskosten für Deiche eingespart. Mangroven bilden auch die Grundlage für die küstennahe Fischerei, da in ihnen die Jungtiere vieler Fischarten heranwachsen. Dennoch sind sie durch Übernutzung stark gefährdet. Das nun bewilligte Projekt wirkt dem durch eine Kombination verschiedener Schritte entgegen, zu denen die Einbeziehung der lokalen Bevölkerung in das Management von Mangroven, die Wiederherstellung degradierter Mangrovenflächen sowie Aufklärungs- und Bildungsmaßnahmen gehören.

Using funds from the Environment Ministry's International Climate Initiative amounting to 2.3 million euros, over the next five years the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) will press ahead with mangrove conservation in Fiji, Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, Samoa and Tonga. The project will implement initial recommendations of "The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity" (TEEB) study which was conducted on behalf of the Federal Environment Ministry and the European Commission and which clearly highlights both the ecological and the economic importance of intact natural habitats. For example, the cultivation and conservation of almost 12,000 hectares of mangroves in Vietnam cost 1.1 million US dollars, but at the same time saved 7.3 million US dollars in maintenance costs for dykes. Mangroves also form the basis for nearshore fishery, as they are home to the young of many fish species. But they are under threat from over-use. The project aims to counter this threat with a combination of different steps, including the participation of local people in the management of mangroves, the restoration of degraded mangrove areas, awareness raising and educational measures.
