Der Global Nature Fund (GNF) ernennt den Tanganjikasee zum „Bedrohten See des Jahres 2017“. Sedimentation, Verschmutzung und Übernutzung bedrohen den zweitgrößten See Afrikas, der von Burundi, der Demokratischen Republik Kongo, Tansania und Sambia umgeben ist. Mit einem Volumen von 17 % des weltweit verfügbaren Trinkwassers ist der Tanganjikasee von globaler Bedeutung und eine Lebensquelle für mehrere Millionen Menschen. Am Welttag der Feuchtgebiete weist der GNF auf die Bedeutung von Seen und Feuchtgebieten weltweit hin. Zusammen mit der burundischen Living Lakes-Partnerorganisation Biraturaba ruft der GNF zur Umsetzung von nachhaltigen Maßnahmen auf, um den Tanganjikasee zu schützen.

Sedimentation, pollution and overexploitation jeopardize the second largest lake in Africa. Containing almost 17 % of the world's available fresh water Lake Tanganyika is of global importance and source of life for millions of people. On the World Day of Wetlands, the GNF draws attention to the importance of lakes and wetlands all over the world. Together with the local Living Lakes partner organization Biraturaba, the GNF calls for sustainable measures to preserve Lake Tanganyika.
