Operationalisation of DAS indicators with remote sensing data

Text (1.684 Zeichen)

The ReFoPlan research project "Operationalisation of DAS indicators with remote sensing data" (DASIF) aimed to develop operational remote sensing methods to create a Germany-wide data basis for selected indicators of the German Adaptation Strategy to Climate Change (DAS). The indicators comprised four impact indicators in lakes: cyanobacteria contamination of bathing waters, spring algal blooms in lakes, water temperature in standing waters, ice cover of lakes and the response indicator green roofs. The research project went through several steps, including analysing gaps and needs in the existing indicators, selecting and validating algorithms and satellite data in case studies, and developing procedures for nationwide indicator calculation. Intermediate results were discussed and further developed several times with experts. Thus, three of the five DASIF indicators were finally published for the first time as remote sensing-based climate change indicators in the DAS Report 2023: cyanobacteria contamination of bathing waters, spring algal blooms in lakes and green roofs in large cities. The developed methods enable a comparable data basis for the selected indicators across Germany. Their calculation was implemented on the Copernicus data and cloud processing platform for German authorities (CODE-DE). An interactive dashboard was created to make the results publicly accessible. The research results showed that spaceborne remote sensing is an effective and precise method for generating Germany-wide climate change indicators and overcoming deficits in existing data bases. Further indicators were identified for which remote sensing could provide a good basis.
