Das 7 bis 8 mm große Tier tritt nie einzeln auf und ist alleine auch gar nicht überlebensfähig, denn wie alle Ameisen bildet die Große Kerbameise Staaten, die bei ihr riesig sind mit mehreren hunderttausend Individuen. Mit der Wahl dieser Ameise will das Kuratorium Insekt des Jahres auf eine besonders geschützte Art aufmerksam machen, die gefährdet ist und deren Ameisenhaufen nicht gestört werden dürfen. "@de;
